PowerPlay Golf to debut in India

The Signature Club Golf Championship, now in its eighth year, which involves 43 clubs spread over 30 cities in the country from September 26 to December 14, is to be played using PowerPlay Golf.

The new format was launched in Mumbai by founder Peter McEvoy and Bollywood actress Neha Dhupia, who has been named as the glamour ambassador for the tournament.

Peter McEvoy, told reporters on Wednesday that the format has been introduced following a drop in audience figures for traditional four-day golf.

“It’s a shorter form, like T20 cricket, five-a-side football and seven-a-side rugby. I think Indian fans would like its faster pace. While normal golf is a reward for patience, in this format you have to make things happen,” he said.

The Signature Club Golf Championship is played in three handicap (0-8, 9-16, 17-24) categories. The top two players in each handicap category at the inter-club level qualify through to the regional finals stage and the all India finals.
